FSLH to Host Seminar on Weight Loss Surgery - Tuesday, July 26, 2011

The Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare (FSLH) bariatric team will host an informational program about weight loss surgery on Tuesday, July 26 at 6pm.

The event will take place in the Soggs Room at St. Luke’s Home, which is located on the St. Luke’s Campus at 1650 Champlin Avenue, New Hartford. The program is free and open to the public. Those interested in attending can call (315) 624-6354 to RSVP by Monday, July 25.

Bariatric Surgery: The One Specialty Where a Big Loss Is a Great Gain

As a surgeon specializing in laparoscopic bariatric surgery for weight loss, William Graber, MD, probably sees greater medical, physical and emotional improvements in his patients than any other surgeon, and that, he says, is why he keeps doing what he does.

Of course, ask any dedicated physician why he or she practices medicine and you’ll probably get a similar answer, but with Dr. Graber’s patients it’s obvious on the surface, since it is common for his patients to lose at least 75 percent of their excess weight, which could be more than 100 pounds. This leads to profound health benefits.

The toll that the morbidly obese pay for carrying that much excess weight is costly. Take diabetes—80 percent of diabetics are overweight or obese. An 11- to 18-pound weight gain doubles a person’s likelihood of developing Type 2 diabetes. The obese often develop high blood pressure and an increased risk for stroke and heart attack. Obesity also tends to bring with it higher levels of lipids — fatty substances like cholesterol and triglycerides — in the blood. Both substances can lead to atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries and, eventually, heart attacks and stroke. There’s also a greater tendency for liver and kidney disease. Perhaps the most staggering statistic is that obesity is responsible for an estimated 300,000 premature deaths each year in the United States alone.

The problem is still growing. According to data released in January by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 34 percent of Americans are classified as obese (a body mass index greater than 30) and about 4 percent, Dr. Graber says, are morbidly obese with a BMI of 40 or higher.

“Obesity and the health problems that go with it are at record levels in the U.S.,” Dr. Graber says, “and right now bariatric surgery is the only way to help the morbidly obese successfully lose weight, keep it off and improve their overall health.”

Socioeconomic disparities in eligibility and access to bariatric surgery

The incidence of obesity and morbid obesity among adults in the United States has continued to increase to epidemic proportions during the past 20 years. The adverse effects of obesity and obesity-related medical conditions have severely affected every aspect of our healthcare system. Multiple studies have now documented the effects of obesity, including greater mortality, increased hospital admissions and outpatient visits, decreased quality of life, and overall costs to the healthcare system that run to billions of dollars annually.

Bariatric surgery has now become widely accepted and scientifically proven as the most effective method for control of both morbid obesity and the obesity-related medical conditions that plague this population. These include diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, sleep apnea, and debilitating joint disease. For patients who meet the criteria for bariatric surgery established by the National Institute of Health, this procedure can be a life-altering and lifesaving intervention. However, as with many hospital-based therapies, a number of additional obstacles to access exist for patients who could clearly benefit from a bariatric procedure.

NEW STUDY FINDS THOSE DENIED INSURANCE FOR BARIATRIC SURGERY

ASMBS - Weight Stayed the Same Over Three Years, But New Diseases Developed at Rapid Pace

LAS VEGAS, NV – JUNE 24, 2010 – Patients who were denied bariatric surgery for insurance reasons developed a slew of new obesity-related diseases and conditions within three years of follow-up, according to a new study presented here at the 27th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

Researchers at Gundersen Lutheran Health System in La Crosse, Wisconsin, compared the medical records of 587 patients who had laparoscopic gastric bypass (LGB) with 189 patients who were medically eligible, but denied bariatric surgery by their insurance provider during the period 2001 to 2007. At the time of initial medical evaluation, patients in both groups had an average body mass index (BMI) of about 48. The goal of the research was to track the development of five obesity-related conditions in patients who were denied treatment and in patients who had bariatric surgery.

ASMBS - Two Major Insurers Now Cover Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
